Stainless Steel is an alloy that has low carbon steel and chromium to prevent corrosion. It is highly corrosion resistant properties which make is inherent, and it won't loses this feature whenever it is scratched during usage or installation.
There is a misconception that stainless steel is stronger than the regular steel which actually is false. Because of the low carbon content of the stainless steel, its alloys cant be hardened whenever they are treated with heat. However, stainless steel alloys that are used in bolts are a bit stronger than unhardened steel when compared to regular steel.
Stainless steel is used to the manufacturing of hardware such stainless steel turnbuckles, stainless steel shackles and stainless steel fasteners. We shall take a look at each of these products of stainless steel and their uses as well.
1. Stainless Steel Turnbuckles
As its name implies, this is a buckle that turns. Its function is to create a connection between two ends of two lengths of wires/ropes/rods/cable and tighten/loosen the same connection by being turned. It comes in several shapes and sizes but is normally rectangular or oblong with a screw hole and a threaded insert at both ends. These screw holes are threaded in opposite directions and when the turnbuckle is turned in a direction, both ends tighten and there would be an increase in tension. When they are turned in the opposite direction, both ends will loosen with a decrease in tension.
Stainless Steel Turnbuckles are used in various areas like in aircraft construction to adjust the tension on wires bracing the wings, shipping industry to add tension to the lashings and rigging of a ship, in theatres for adjusting the stage's rigging, etc.
2. Stainless Steel Shackles
Stainless Steel Shackles are U-shaped metal bars, fastened with a nut and bolt across its opening. Stainless Steel Shackles are used for several purposes ranging from sailing to industrial rigging. They are made up of a durable and strong metal, stainless steel which serves the purpose of providing a strong and reliable connection point in different applications.
There are different types of Stainless Steel Shackles which come in various shapes and sizes for various functions. Each type has its own features making it suitable for its own purpose. For instance, the anchor shackle is used in various industrial applications involving more than two load directions. Bow Shackles have a shape of a bow which makes them useful for slacklining. Also, there are Chain shackles used for bi-directional load and twist shackles for situations when the gear has to be rotated without using different connected devices.
3. Stainless Steel Fasteners
Stainless Steel Fasteners are used for joining separate parts and they include hardware such as bolts and nuts, pins, screws and other products made from stainless steel. There are several alloys of stainless steel used for making fasteners with the qualities of a fastener depending on the alloy used. They usually fall into 3 basic types which are martensitic, ferritic and austenitic. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages.
They are used in several industries such as defense, aerospace, automotive, waste processing, petrochemical, pharmaceutical and marine fields.
